~Seminar on Hong Kong reporters in the mainland & China’s media policy~
Last week NowTV reporter Wong Ka Yu was in Chengdu to cover the trial of the activist Tan Zuoren. On Wednesday morning, she was confined to hotel room in Chengdu as police carried out a search for suspected illegal drugs.
This incident is unique because the police officers said they had received a tip tip-off that there were illegal substances in the reporters’ rooms. In the past, the police officers might just seize reporters’ press cards or blockage to keep them away from the news coverage. Judging from what happened, does this incident indicate an important, calculated shift of the media policy in the Mainland? Or, just an isolated, ruthless case mishandled by local officers in certain cities in dealing with HK reporters’ general duties?
